Mezzo-soprano

Based for many years now in Amsterdam, British mezzo soprano Polly Leech is much in demand at major houses across Europe. Her many recent engagements include her critically-acclaimed debut at the Royal Ballet & Opera in the title role of Handel’s Giustino, Gismonda Ottone for the Opéra de l'Impératrice in Switzerland;  Waltraute Die Walküre and Lydia in the world premiere of Fanny & Alexander for La Monnaie, La suora Zelatrice and La Ciesca Il Trittico, Sorceress Dido & Aeneas and Nurse Boris Godunov for Dutch National Opera, Tisbe La Cenerentola for Dutch National Opera and the Opéra de Montpellier, Der Komponist Ariadne auf Naxos and Dorabella Così fan tutte for Garsington Opera, Mrs Grose The Turn of the Screw for the Opera Carlo Felice Genoa, Hippolyta A Midsummer Night's Dream for the Opéra de Montpellier, Zweite Dame Die Zauberflöte with the Nederlandse Reisopera, and Orfeo in Glück’s Orfeo ed Eurydice with Opera North. On the concert platform, she has recently sung the Verdi Requiem with the Gabrieli Consort/Paul McCreesh and with the Krakow Philharmonic, Berlioz Les nuits d’été with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Ryan Bancroft, and Ravel Shéhérazade with the Concertgebouworkest at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.

Alongside the RBO’s Giustino, Polly’s busy 25-26 season also included her return to the Nederlandse Reisopera as Fox/Zlatohřbítek The Cunning Little Vixen, Tisbe La Cenerentola at the Theater Basel, her full debut at Wigmore Hall as Piacere in Handel's Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (also with La Nuova Musica), her debut at the Opéra de Lille as Zweite Dame Die Zauberflöte and Gismonda Ottone for the Opéra de l'Impératrice in Switzerland.

Her current and future plans include her debuts at the Opéras de Lausanne and Toulon as Mrs Grose in a new production of The Turn of the Screw, a return to one of her signature roles as Der Komponist Ariadne auf Naxos for her debut at the Opéra de Dijon, and a return to the Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier as Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro.

Polly studied molecular biology and biochemistry at Durham University before attending the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio in London, followed by two years as a member of the Dutch National Opera Studio. She is a regular guest at Dutch National Opera, where her many other appearances include Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro, Abra Juditha Triumphans, Mercedes Carmen, Fidalma Il Matrimonio Segreto, Pastuchyna Jenufa and Romaine Brooks in the world premiere of Willem Jeth’s Ritratto.

Amongst her many other roles and appearances, Polly has sung Matilde in Handel's Lotario in Payerne, Switzerland, Annio La Clemenza di Tito and Mallika Lakmé for Chelsea Opera Group, and, also in the UK, Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel and Irene Theodora.  For her Garsington season as Dorabella Così fan tutte, Polly was awarded the prestigious end of season Leonard Ingrams Award.

Her other recent concert appearances include Elgar Sea Pictures with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Loevendie Six Turkish Folk Songs with the Concertgebouworkest (with a live recording now available), a series of Rossini gala concerts with the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest and Mahler Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the Koninklijke Harmonie van Thorn.

Parmi ses nombreux récents engagements, le rôle-titre Giustino (Haendel) pour ses débuts à Covent Garden, remportant un succès considérable, son retour à l'Opéra de l'Impératrice à Payerne en Suisse pour Gismonda Ottone (Haendel), Waltraute Die Walküre et Lydia pour la création mondiale de Fanny & Alexander à La Monnaie à Bruxelles, la suora Zelatrice et La Ciesca Il Trittico, la Sorcière Didon et Énée ainsi que la Nourrice Boris Godounov à l'Opéra National des Pays-Bas à Amsterdam, Tisbe La Cenerentola (Amsterdam et Opéra de Montpellier), le Compositeur Ariadne auf Naxos et Dorabella Così fan tutte à Garsington,ses débuts italiens avec Mrs Grose The Turn of the Screw à Gênes, Hippolyta A Midsummer Night's Dream à l'Opéra de Montpellier, la Deuxième Dame La Flûte Enchantée pour le Nederlandse Reisopera, et Orfeo Orfeo ed Eurydice (Gluck) pour Opera North à Leeds. En concert, elle a récemment chanté le Requiem de Verdi avec le Gabrieli Consort/Paul McCreesh et la Philharmonie de Cracovie, Les Nuits d’été de Berlioz avec le  BBC National Orchestra of Wales, et Shéhérazade de Ravel avec l'Orchestre du Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam.

Sa saison 25-26, très active, après s'être ouverte avec Giustino à Covent Garden, s'est poursuivie avec  le Renard La Petite Renarde Rusée pour le Nedersandse Reisopera, Tisbe La Cenerentola à l'Opéra de Bâle, ses débuts au Wigmore Hall de Londres avec Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno de Haendel et ses ses débuts à l'Opéra de Lille dans la Deuxième Dame La Flûte Enchantée ainsi que Gismonda Ottone (Haendel) pour l'Opéra de l'Impératrice à Payerne en Suisse.

Parmi ses projets pour la saison 26-27, Mrs Grose pour une nouvelle production de The Turn of the Screw à l'Opéra de Lausanne et à l'Opéra de Toulon, ainsi que son retour à deux rôles fétiches : Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro à l'Opéra de Montellier et le Compositeur Ariane à Naxos à l'Opéra de Dijon.

Après une licence en biologie moléculaire, Polly Leech a brillamment achevé ses études au Royal College of Music de Londres, puis a suivi un cursus d’une année au National Opera Studio à Londres ; elle a ensuite terminé un cursus de deux ans à l’Opéra Studio de l'Opéra National des Pays-Bas à Amsterdam, où elle vit à présent et est régulièrement invitée par l'Opéra, pour entre autres Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro, Abra Juditha Triumphans, Mercédès Carmen, Fidalma Il Matrimonio Segreto, Pastuchyna Jenufa et Romaine Brooks pour la création mondiale de Ritratto, de Willem Jeth.

Parmi ses récentes engagements, Matilde dans Lotario de Haendel à  Payerne, en Suisse, Annio La Clemenza di Tito et Mallika Lakmé pour le Chelsea Opera Group, et, toujours au Royaume-Uni, Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel et Irene Theodora (Haendel).

En concert, elle a récemment chanté, entre autres, les Sea Pictures d'Elgar avec le BBC National Orchestra of Wales, les Six Turkish Folk Songs (Loevendie) avec l'Orchestre du  Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam (enregistrement à paraître sous peu), une série de concerts de gala consacrés à Rossini avec le Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest et Des Knaben Wunderhorn de Mahler avec la Koninklijke Harmonie van Thorn.
