Nia Coleman

Soprano

Born in the UK and now resident in Copenhagen, coloratura soprano Nia Coleman trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and the Alexander Gibson Opera School the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, following on from a first degree in Music and Drama at Manchester University.

Summer 2025 saw Nia return to Longborough Festival Opera as Yniold Pelléas et Mélisande. She has also recently covered the role of Zerbinetta Ariadne auf Naxos for the Royal Danish Opera, performing the role to much acclaim for the general rehearsal; for the same house she has also performed excerpts as Madame Mao Nixon in China, has featured as soprano soloist for Mendelssohn Hör mein Bitten on Radio Danmark, and has also appeared as La Cugina Madama Butterfly and Solo Handmaid The Handmaid’s Tale.

Fast gaining a reputation for her work in contemporary music, Nia’s recent projects including Hannah Kendall’s The Knife of Dawn for the Royal Ballet and Opera in London (conducted by Jonathon Heyward; directed by Ola Ince) and the premiere of New Dark Age (conducted by Natalie Murray Beale; directed by Katie Mitchell) for the Royal Ballet and Opera in London, the world premiere of the Elena Langer’s song cycle It’s Not You, It’s Me at the Wigmore Hall, the world premiere of Spellbook for Longborough Festival Opera in collaboration with RIOT Ensemble, and the UK premiere of Ana Sokolović’s Svadba, a contemporary folk opera for six unaccompanied female voices at Waterperry Opera Festival.

Nia also regularly appears on the concert platform at leading UK venues including the Royal Opera House, the Wigmore Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Halls, Edinburgh Usher Hall and Snape Maltings. She has also appeared as guest soloist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for their chamber concert series, covering a wide variety of repertoire including Cunégonde’s Glitter and be Gay from Bernstein’s Candide to Cantilena in Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras. Nia has also appeared as soloist for the Royal Academy of Music & Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series, and is a Britten-Pears Young Artist alumna.

Nia’s extensive stage experience covers opera, music theatre and straight theatre, with her other roles including Kitty Hart Dead Man Walking, Musetta La bohème, Nella Gianni Schicchi, Bubikopf Der Kaiser Von Atlantis and Belinda Dido and Aeneas, as well as Maria West Side Story and Juliet Romeo and Juliet.

La soprano colorature britannique Nia Coleman vit à présent à Copenhague. Elle avait été formée à la Royal Academy of Music de Londres et à l'Alexander Gibson Opera School au Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, après avoir obtenu un premier diplôme en musique et théâtre à l'Université de Manchester.

Elle est retournée à l'été 2025 au Longborough Festival Opera pour Yniold Pelléas et Mélisande ; elle avait auparavant doublé pour l'Opéra Toyal du Danemark Zerbinetta Ariadne auf Naxos, chantant le rôle sur scène avec grand succès lors de la répétition générale ; et dans le même théâtre des extraits de Madame Mao Nixon in China, la partie de soprano solo du Psaume 42 de Mendelssohn pour la Radio danoise, ainsi que la Cugina Madama Butterfly et l'une des Servantes La Servante Écarlate de Poul Ruders.

Nia Coleman s'est rapidement fait connaître pour son engagement en faveur du répertoire contemporain. Ainsi, elle a récemment pris part à The Knife of Dawn de Hannah Kendall (dirigé par Jonathon Heyward et mis en scène par Ola Ince) et à la création de New Dark Age (dirigé par Natalie Murray Beale et mis en scène par Katie Mitchell), tous deux pour le Royal Ballet and Opera de Londres, ainsi qu'aux premières mondiales du cycle de mélodies d'Elena Langer It's Not You, It's Me au Wigmore Hall à Londres et de Spellbook au Longborough Festival Opera en collaboration avec le  RIOT Ensemble, et à la première britannique de Svadba d'Ana Sokolović, opéra pour six voix féminines a cappella au Waterperry Opera Festival.

Elle se produit également régulièrement sur les scènes britanniques : Covent Garden, Wigmore Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Halls, Usher Hall à Édimbourg et Snape Maltings. Elle a été invitée par le Royal Scottish National Orchestra pour leur concerts de musique de chambre, avec un répertoire très varié, de  "Glitter and be Gay" dans Candide (Bernstein) aux Bachianas Brasileiras de Villa-Lobos. Elle a participé à la Royal Academy of Music & Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series.
