Kyu Choi
Baritone
South Korean baritone, Kyu Choi, graduated from the National University of Arts in Korea before taking up a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied for his Masters, and joining the National Opera Studio.
Since 2021, he has been a member of the Theater Basel ensemble, following a year as part of the theatre’s OperAvenir ensemble, and has sung roles including Germont La Traviata, Figaro Il barbiere di Siviglia, Escamillo Carmen, 1stSoldier Salome, Marullo Rigoletto, Algerian Man in Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza, Bruder Rufin Saint François d’Assise, Der Sprecher Die Zauberflöte, Marco Gianni Schicchi and Baron Douphol La Traviata.
His many other roles include the title role in Don Giovanni, Robert in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, Le Podestat in Bizet’s Le Docteur Miracle and Dr Falke Die Fledermaus in Berlin. In concert, he has appeared at the Wigmore Hall and the Seoul Art Centre Recital Hall.
His many awards and competition successes include 1st Prize wins at the N. Obukhova International Singing Competition in Russia (2018), the Pavarotti Prize (2019) and the Joaninha award (2019), 2nd Prize at the Clonter Opera Prize (2019), and the opera prize at the Mozart Singing Competition (2017). He was also a finalist in the Wilhelm Stenhammer International Music Competition in Sweden (2018).
Après son diplôme à l’Université Nationale des Arts de Corée, le baryton sud-coréen Kyu Choi a intégré la Royal Academy of Music à Londres, où il a obtenu son Master, puis le National Opera Studio au Royaume-Uni.
Il est depuis 2021 membre permanent de la troupe de l'Opéra de Bâle, après avoir y intégré l'opéra-sudio OperAvenir. Il y a chanté, entre autres, Germont La Traviata, Figaro Le Barbier de Séville, Escamillo Carmen, le Premier Soldat Salome, Marullo Rigoletto et Un Algérien Intolleranza (Luigi Nono).
Il avait auparavant chanté en récital au Wigmore Hall de Londres et au Seoul Art Centre Recital Hall, et sur scène, plusieurs premiers rôles, tels le rôle-titre dans Don Giovanni, Robert dans Iolanta, Le Podestat dans Le Docteur Miracle (Bizet) et Falke dans Die Fledermaus à Berlin.
Il a remporté de nombreux prix : parmi les plus récents, le Premier Prix au Concours International Les Azuriales (2019), le Premier Prix au Concours International N. Obukhova en Russie (2018), le Prix Pavarotti (2019) et le Joaninha award (2019), le Second Prix au Clonter Opera Prize (2019), et le Prix d’Opéra au Concours Mozart (2017). Il a de plus été finaliste au Wilhelm Stenhammer International Music Competition en Suède (2018).
