Jessica Walker

Mezzo-soprano

Singer/writer, mezzo-soprano Jessica Walker is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She specialises in the creation of genre-defying performance. Originally an opera singer, she is now known for her distinctive music theatre works, which are commissioned by opera companies, theatres and festivals alike.  Equally at home in contemporary opera, cabaret and theatre, she continues to perform internationally, with recent critically acclaimed performances in New York, Paris, Switzerland and Japan.

Amongst her many recent and current writing/performing projects are her first full opera libretto - Coming up for air - for Oper Leipzig with composer Bernd Franke (to premiere in 2025-6), writing collaborations with composers Luke Styles (including Jeptha's Daughter with La Nuova Musica (premiered at the Wigmore Hall in 2024) and Jasper Dommett (Buxton Festival 2025), plus performances in London, at the Deal, Nevill Holt and Lichfield Festivals and the Ludlow English Song Weekend, together with a recital of songs by Brel and Barbara in St Omer (also in development as a fully-staged show: Barbara – La solitude for 2025).

Jessica has also recently developed and performed in The People’s Cabaret (co-commissioned by the Brighton and Norfolk & Norwich Festivals, and O Festival, Rotterdam), and written the libretto for Voices of Power, a Three Choirs Festival commission (both projects with music by Luke Styles); (Dead) Funny Women (Lichfield Festival, where Jessica was Associate Artist from 2022-4); Scene/Unseen, written with Joseph Atkins and directed by James Dacre (film and live show); Forbidden Love (O Festival); Not Such Quiet Girls, an Opera North commission commemorating the end of WW1; plus her critically-acclaimed plays/solo works All I Want is One Night, The Girl I Left Behind Me and Pat Kirkwood is Angry which she has performed across the UK and in three Brits off Broadway seasons in New York.

Her typically-eclectic stage and screen performances include Hildy On The Town (Japan), Gwendolen in Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest (Switzerland, France), Nurse/Harriet Sunday in the Park with George (Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris), Caryl Churchill’s The Skriker (with RET/MIF; BBC Radio 3), the Tom Waits project Mercy and Grand (Adelaide Festival), and her filmed cabaret Songs for our Times, recorded during lockdown for Lichfield Festival by Brown Boy Productions/Leon Lopez.

Jessica’s other projects include her cabaret opera An Eye for an Eye (with David Knotts; Bath and St Magnus Festivals), Love is a Drag (Grassington Festival), Forbidden Love (Omnibus Theatre), Peace Cabaret (Lichfield Festival), Songs for Paris and L’Amour et La Mort (Live at Zedel), all with Joseph Atkins;  Brel, Brassens & Barbara (Bath International Music Festival), and Recession Songs and Songs from the Left Bank – with Jim Holmes (Opera North).  Other concert engagements include Ligeti’s Aventures – Nouvelles Aventures, and the UK premiere of Sarah Kirkland Snider's Penelope and world premiere of Joanna Lee’s song cycle, Elephant Woman (both with Psappha). She also toured Mercy and Grand: the Tom Waits Project with Opera North throughout the UK and in Milan.

Her recordings include Mercy and Grand with Gavin Bryars; All I Want is One Night, from her play of the same name; The Girl I Left Behind Me, from her solo show of the same name, and Enter the Peace Broker (songs from World War I). A new disc of original songs with existing cabaret repertoire is planned for release in 2025.

Away from writing and performing, Jessica is also Lead and Senior Lecturer in Artist Development at the Royal Academy of Music.  She received her practice-led doctorate in 2016 with special commendation from Leeds University: please see her website for further details.
