Gemma Ní Bhriain
Mezzo-soprano
Dublin-born mezzo-soprano Gemma Ní Bhriain studied with Dr Veronica Dunne at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, before spending two seasons as a member of the Atelier Lyrique Opera Studio at the Opéra national de Paris, and a further two seasons at the International Opera Studio at the Opernhaus Zurich.
She is now busy both at home and across Europe, with recent appearances as Marcellina Le nozze di Figaro for the Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn in Switzerland and her Royal Opera House debut as Megacle in Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade at the Linbury Theatre in London. An impeccable technique and musicality bring a rare intensity to Gemma's performances and, as she now turns her attention to roles with strong character.
Most recently, she made her role debut as Hippolyta A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival and appeared in the world premiere of Tom Lane’s Her Father’s Voice, both in Ireland. This season, she covered Buttercup HMS Pinafore for ENO and Gemma will open her 2026-7 season as Maria Page in Balfe’s rarely-performed Falstaff at the Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn.
During her time at the Opéra national de Paris and Opernhaus Zurich, Gemma’s many roles included Cléone Médée, Le Pâtre/ La Chatte/L'écureuil L'enfant et les sortilèges, Zweite Dame Die Zauberflöte, Valletto L'incoronazione di Poppea, Ramiro La finta giardiniera, Alisa Lucia di Lammermoor, Enrichetta di Francia I Puritani and Proserpina Orfeo.
A regular performer at home in Dublin with Irish National Opera, Gemma has also sung Niklausse Les contes d’Hoffmann, Dorabella Cosi fan tutte, Siebel Faust, Anna Maria Stuarda, Mother Paper Boat, the mezzo-soprano role in GLAOCH and, most recently, Megacle in Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade. Other roles include La Ciesca Gianni Schicchi (Blackwater Valley Opera Festival) and Piacere Il trionfo del tempo (Orkester Nord).
Equally at home on the concert platform, Gemma has made concert debuts at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, at the Amphithéâtre Bastille, with Radio France and at the Teatro Mayor Bogotá. She is also a member of a new chamber ensemble, Trio Cantare, with pianist Cahal Masterson and cellist Yseult Cooper-Stockdale. Their debut recital, at the Drogheda Classical Music Festival was broadcast on RTÉ lyric fm, followed by further performances at the Belfast International Arts Festival and Music for Wexford.

Native de Dublin, la mezzo-soprano Gemma Ní Bhriain a étudié le chant à la Royal Irish Academy of Music dans sa ville natale, avant d'intégrer pour deux saisons l'Atelier Lyrique Opera de l'Opéra National de Paris, suivies par deux saisons au Studio international de l'Opéra de Zurich.

Parmi ses dernières prises de rôle, Hippolyta A Midsummer Night’s Dream au Blackwater Valley Opera Festival en Irlande ; elle a de plus participé à la création de Her Father's Voice de Tom Lane en Irlande. Sa saison 2026-27 s'ouvrira avec Maria Page dans le rareFalstaff de William Balfe au TOBS.
A Paris et à Zurich, elle a pu aborder, entre autres, Cléone Médée, Le Pâtre/ La Chatte/L'Écureuil L'enfant et les sortilèges, la Deuxième Dame La Flûte Enchantée, Valletto L'incoronazione di Poppea, Ramiro La finta giardiniera, Alisa Lucia di Lammermoor, Enrichetta di Francia I Puritani et Proserpina Orfeo. Elle a de plus créé deux ouvrages à l'Opéra de Paris : Maudits Les Innocents (de Mikel Urquiza, Julien Lembke, Dider Rotella et Francisco Alvarado) et Vol retour, version française de The Way Back Home de Joanna Lee.
Elle chante régulièrement à Dublin avec l'Irish National Opera : Niklausse Les contes d’Hoffmann, Dorabella Cosi fan tutte, Siébel Faust, Anna Maria Stuarda, Mother Paper Boat, le rôle de mezzo-soprano dans GLAOCH et, plus récemment, Megacle L’Olimpiade (Vivaldi). Et par ailleurs La Ciesca Gianni Schicchi (Blackwater Valley Opera Festival) et Piacere Il trionfo del tempo (Orkester Nord).
Tout aussi à l'aise au concert, Gemma Ní Bhriain a fait ses débuts au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, à l'Amphithéâtre Bastille, avec Radio France et au Teatro Mayor de Bogotá. Elle est membre fondatrice du Trio Cantare, avec la pianiste Cahal Masterson et la violoncelliste Yseult Cooper-Stockdale ; leur concert inaugural, au Drogheda Classical Music Festival, a été diffusé sur les ondes de la radio nationale irlandaise (RTÉ), après quoi l'ensemble s'est produit au Belfast International Arts Festival et à Music for Wexford.
