Alys Mererid Roberts
Soprano
Welsh soprano Alys Mererid Roberts graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Mary Nelson and Ingrid Surgenor, after a first degree at Durham University. Her studies were kindly supported by the Bryn Terfel Foundation, the Michael and Sally Payton Scholarship, the Maple Harper Charitable Trust, the Clive and Sylvia Richards Charity and the Sickle Foundation. She has also been a part of the prestigious Samling Academy.
Her many recent appearances include Novice Suor Angelica with Welsh National Opera, Tiny Tim/Fan for a revival of Opera Holland Park’s A Christmas Carol, Rachel in the Dunedin Consort’s critically-acclaimed staged baroque project Out Of Her Mouth, multiple roles in Longborough Festival Opera’s The Fairy Queen, Yum Yum The Mikado for Charles Court Opera, and both The Princess in Montsalvatge’s El Gato Con Botas (Puss in Boots) and Gretel Hänsel und Gretel for Mid Wales Opera.
Alongside a return to the Dunedin Consort for their Easter performances of St Matthew Passion, 2025 has also seen Alys in the soprano role for English Touring Opera’s Shakespeare-inspired What Dreams May Come!, with additional appearances for the company in the London and across UK for The Vanishing Forest. This summer, she returns to Charles Court Opera as Yum Yum The Mikado.
Alys has also recently appeared as Flora in Opera Glassworks’ critically-acclaimed new film of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, recorded at Wilton’s Music Hall, as well as making her debut with English Touring Opera as the title role in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, plus Polly Peachum The Beggar’s Opera and Shepherd Boy Tosca both for Mid Wales Opera.
Other roles include Tweedle Dee in Will Todd and Maggie Gottlieb’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Annina La Traviata and the roles of Tiny Tim and Fan in the premiere of Will Todd’s A Christmas Carol (all for Opera Holland Park), Sandman and Dew Fairy Hänsel und Gretel, and the Mozartian title roles of the Impressario and Bastienne (all for Pop Up Opera).
Whilst a student, Alys also sang Euridice Orphée aux Enfers, Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro, Pannochka May Night, Amore and Damigella L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Una Conversa Suor Angelica. During this time, she also appeared in the premiere of Gair ar Gnawdfor by Pwyll ap Sion for Welsh National Opera, and created the role of Muse in the opera-film Hedd Wyn by Stephen McNeff, also for WNO, as well as singing 2nd Boy The Magic Flute for Mid Wales Opera.

Durant ses études à la Royal Academy, elle a chanté, entre autres, Eurydice Orphée aux Enfers, Barbarina Le Nozze Di Figaro, Pannochka dans La Nuit de Mai de Rimsky-Korsakov, Amore et Damigella L’incoronazione di Poppea, et Una Conversa Suor Angelica. Encore étudiante, elle a participé à la première exécution de Gair ar Gnawdfor de Pwyll ap Sion au Welsh National Opera, et créé la Muse dans l’opéra filmé Hedd Wyn de Stephen McNeff, toujours pour le WNO, et chanté le Deuxième garçon dans La Flûte Enchantée au Mid Wales Opera.
Après son diplôme à la RAM en 2017, elle a fait ses débuts à Opera Holland Park dans La Rondine, chanté Tweedle Dee dans Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland de Will Todd et Maggie Gottlieb, et créé les rôles de Tiny Tim et Fan dans A Christmas Carol de Todd pour la même compagnie. Parmi ses autres rôles, l’Homme au sable et l’Homme à la rosée dans Hänsel und Gretel pour le Pop Up Opera, ainsi que Yum Yum The Mikado au Charles Court Opera ; de nouveau pour Opera Holland Park, elle a chanté Annina dans leur production pour jeunes artistes de La Traviata, ainsi que l’Impressario et Bastienne dans le double programme Mozart du Pop Up Opera, en tournée.
Elle a récemment chanté Flora dans une production filmée du Tour d’Écrou de Britten qui a remporté un grand succès, tournée au Wilton’s Music Hall, ainsi qu’ une première collaboration avec l’English Touring Opera dans le rôle-titre du Coq d’Or de Rimsky-Korsadov, Polly Peachum The Beggar’s Opera et le Berger Tosca, tous deux pour le Mid Wales Opera.
Sa saison 2022-2023 a débuté avec son retour au Mid Wales Opera dans la Princesse El Gato Con Botas (Montsalvage), suivie par Gretel Hänsel und Gretel en tournée avec la même compagnie. Très actif, son été 2023 la voit collaborer avec le Dunedin Consort pour un nouveau projet Out of Her Mouth, avec des représentations à Glasgow, Edinbourg, York et Londres (Spitalfields Festival), ainsi qu’avec le Longborough Festival Opera pour plusieurs roles dans The Fairy Queen.
